 Jinma 254 wont crank over
« Thread Started on May 9, 2010, 3:58am »

I went to start the red warrior today and it went to was cranking over then just stopped. I turned the key again and nothing. No clicking sounds or anything! :'( It was just like a flat battery. The power light on the dash was working, tail lights, headlights, working lights and flashers all working.

Pulled the battery out and not a bit of water in the battery. As the tractors is second hand and I don't know how many times it had been like this and recharged I bought a new one.

Connected the new battery and nothing. No crank, no solenoid whining over, nothing. This is why I am suspecting electrical instead of equipment such starter motor and solenoid.

I pulled the 30AMP fuse and it was broken.

I replaced the fuse wire and still nothing. Turn the key and nothing.

I ran out of daylight and will check tomorrow to see if there is still some 30amp fuse wire still in the slot - ( I feel like am grasping at straws here in desperation and hope).

The terminals at the battery and a new battery are OK.

I am thinking it could be the ignition key???

does anyone have any ideas?

I will check the oil and water in the daylight just to illuminate major trouble - fingers crossed for me.

I am also thinking that I washed the tractor last week and a bit of water might have moved into the fuse box but it started OK after i washed it.

I keep thinking ignition.

I am at a stage where I have spent more time on the tractor with maintenance and tidying it up then i am on it actually working it. :(

Does anyone have any ideas?

Try to take a screwdriver and jump accross the big wire and the little wire on the starter, make sure the tractor is in neutral because this bypass's the saftey switchs. If it will start the starter and solenoid is good and you will need to look at the ignition switch, clutch saftey switch,

If it does not start or try to start ,it may be the starter or solenoid

The same thing happened to Me the other day on my YTO , I had ran it earlier in the day & all was well , went back out to start it & it was dead . Being fairlly new to Me I checked the obvious first , batt/connections & even put a charger on it & still nothing .

On Mine the fuses are under the left side under the dash . I just reached under there & placed my fingers on the back of the fuse block while turning the key & it came to life , dash lights came on & it fired right up .

Turned out to be a bad connection on one of the fuses plug ins . Since you had a fuse that you found bad I would start there & check for loose or bad connections as to why it burnt out . I still haven,t fixed mine right yet & have to reach under everytime I start it , But I,m certain thats where my problem is . Hopefully yours is as simple . Best of luck & let us know what you find out . ;D

Hey Tangle's,

How's it going Way Down in Australia?

Like Tommy was saying,, If it were mine,, I would be looking at the Clutch Safety Switch First,, and then to the Ignition Switch.

My Clutch Safety Switch Went out many a Moon's ago. Those thing's agravated me to death on the Motorbike's,, and so I gave up on them,, once I found out what the trouble was,, and tossed them in the Trash Can,, and Made a permanent Connection where the Switch was at.

Now it is Best to replace the Switch,, if that is it,, but when I was growing up on the Farm,, none of our Tractor's had a Clutch Safety Switch. Not saying I did the it the Safe or Best Way,, but they are just too agravateing for me to Deal with.

On my Tractor,, the Clutch Safety Switch is on the Chassis,, where the Clutch Arm hit's the Chassis when Fully Depressed.

Keep us updated please,
Joe :)

Hi Guys!!!

I GOT IT GOING!!!!!!! ;D

I called a guy today in the NT - Northern Territory in a town called Darwin. It is in the top end of Australia and I am around the middle of the east coast. So, a fair way away, a bit of geography for you guys.

Tried winding it over through the solenoid poles with the screwdriver and wouldn't start.

Anyway, this guys is in the depot where they are assembled in oz. What a champion this guys is. Tommy and Joe, you guys would click well with this guy. I told him what i had tried and what was going on and in less than 4 minutes told me what to check.

Tommy, he too went straight to the clutch switch for wire trouble. I said it was all fine. He then said 30AMP fuse. I said was blown but is not good. He said there is one other thing.

He said hydraulic pump! go to the quick release and undo it and re-connect. He said sometimes the balls in the quick release clog up and stop the flow of fluid. He said in the new tractors when assembling them they now remove the balls to stop this incident happening.

So, I did as discussed and nothing. So I got my fluid and flushed the connection throughly and pressed in and moved the balls in the quick release.

I also filled up the hydraulic reservoir at the same time - not overfilled. Just to the bottom of the dipstick.

Before I went to kick the red warrior over, I got down and checked the clutch switch. I got my water dispersant can and disconnected the switch connection and gave it a good spray and reconnected several times.

I did the same to the brake switch while i was at it.

Well, when I turned the key I heard the solenoid/starter click i knew that it was promising. I went all the way and she cranked over!!!! yeee haa!! ;D I was one happy chap I can tell you.

The guy from NT reassured me on the phone and said it is not a big problem mate so don't worry and call me if you nee me.

To be honest guys!!! I really think it was the switch all along but at least I learnt something else about the hydraulic quick release and couldn't wait to tell you guys about. I am sure some of you might already be aware of it but for me I had no idea what the hell I was doing. I am a real novice but can tell you that my knowledge is gathering quickly.

I want to thank you guys for your support. It is one of the best things I have done by joining the forum and will try to contribute to it to help others like you do for me.

So, to thanks guys for your support and I working on some stuff to post soon. I am still working on the wiring diagram for the lights etc.

Take care and thanks

Cheers

I GOT IT GOING!!!!!!!

Good Job Tangle's!!!

When I had problems with the Clutch Safety/Starter Lockout Switch,, it looked good,, but was broken up on the inside's.

Maybe the wire's shorted out in the Switch and that Blew the 30 amp fuse? Don't know,, but something shorted,, I'm thinking, that caused the 30 amp fuse to blow.

Once I got rid of that Clutch Safety Switch on mine,, I haven't had any problem's with the Starter Engagein. Not saying to do that,, but you could take it out of the Circuit,, to test at least. I just used WireNut's to complete the Wire Connections on my 224. That's been many a Moon ago,, and still going good.

There's nothing much more agravateing,, than to have work to do,, and The Tractor won't Start,
Joe :)

Hey Joe

I'm interested to know more about how you bypassed the Clutch Safety Switch? E.g. Did you connect the 2 wires that go into the safety switch into a toggle switch?

You are right about the fuse!! Something has caused it to blow!!!! Maybe when I tried to jump start the tractor? What do you think?

Cheers Tangles

Hey Tangles,

The Clutch Safety/Starter Lockout Switch,, that the Clutch Pedal operates,, is just a Switch that Completes the Circuit to the Starter,, from the Ignition Switch.

I just looked at the Switch and the Wires that go into the Switch. I observed which which wire's were being Switched,, and then I just Wirenutted each of the 2 wires together. Take's 2 wirenut's.

It's been year's since I did that,, but seemed like I had to cut the wire's to remove the Switch.

Just observe and match the wire's that are going through the Switch,, and that's all there is to it.

The main purpose of the Safety Switch, IMO,, is to prevent an accident of starting the Tractor in Gear,, without the Clutch being Depressed. People have gotten severely injured doing this,, and that's why,, they started putting the Clutch Safety Switch on Tractors.

I was always taught from the GetGo,, to always Depress the Clutch,, before trying to start anything,, that had a Manual Transmission. Easier on the Starter, Batry,, and The Whole Starting Circuitry,, and in my Opinion,, it is a Good Practice,, to always do.

This is just a Guess on My Part,, but I am thinking that the 30 amp fuse blew,, because a Positive Wire Shorted to Ground/Chassis. I've never jumped my Starter using the Method Described,, but I imagine,, that if the Wrong Terminal were Jumped that it might blow a fuse,, just not sure.

The extent of My Knowledge on Lectricity is Very Limited. With the help of other's,, I usually can get it Solved,, but each and everytime,, it is sort of like a Miracle from Above. I get it figured out,, sort of,, but It hurts My So Small of a Mind,, and I try to Forget what I learned,, as quick as I can... ;D

I do the best that I can with Batry's and Lectricity,, but I really don't like to work with it. I do though,, but only because I have to, to try and keep the Tractor going.

Just remember that it is just a Switch,, that is completeing the Circuit,, and all you are doing,, is bypassing the Switch,, and permanently completeing the Circuit,, until/or if you get a new safety switch.

Those Safety Switch's aggravated me so much on The Motobike's. Once I figured out what was going on,, I got rid of the Safety Switch,, and Threw that thing as far as I could.

I hope that I explained it well enough to understand.

Keep us updated please,
Joe :)

Edit ~ Just got in,, and took a look underneath my 224. I thought that I had used 2 WireNut's,, but I only saw One,, So just take a look at the Wireing at the Switch on Your's. It may only take one WireNut to complete the Circuit.

Tangles,

I had to get under the Tractor today,, to take off the DrawBar,, so I could hitch up to the Mower. So I took these Pic's for You:

I left the Safety Swtich Bracket on,, in case I ever want to mount a Switch again.

[image] j

I was trying before to recall from Memory. But on my Tractor,, the Switch only had 2 wirz,, running to it. So I just cut the Wire's from the Switch and just Wirenutted them together to complete the Circuit. I also left the Connector in place as well,, in case I ever do want to install another Safety Switch.

Not saying that anybody else should do as I did,, as it is a Safety Switch,, to prevent injury. Such as a Child playing on the Tractor,, and just turning the Ignition to Start.

Hope this helps,
Joe :)

I'm new to this board but have had exactly the same problems with my Jinma 454. I live in Northwest Pennsylvania and my tractor seems to like Alabama better (I purchased it on ebay earlier this year). It was encouraging to read the same symptoms I faced over and over again and share in the pain of others! Now that the weather is warmer, it either starts right up or clicks a few times and then starts. During the winter, I would short it out across the solenoid and starter connections as mentioned in this and other threads and the starter would whir without engaging. Usually then, when I jumped back up and turned the key, it would crank.

On another thread (I think it was someone named Larry) mentioned hooking up an auxiliary solenoid and connecting it with a red panic button on the dash. His seems to be the best solution so far. I recently purchased from Affordable Tractor for $22 a starter relay that fits on top of the fuse box. When it arrives next week, I'll let you know if that does any good. I was going to buy a new solenoid from them but the salesman has been reading this forum and suggested I try the starter relay first. He thought that the relay might be the problem because of what I said about cold weather. Here's hoping I don't need to rig up an auxiliary solenoid.

Hi Joe

Thanks for posting the pics mate.

It is really simple to do. I understood what to do as soon as I saw the pics so many thanks for posting them. I am sorry that I haven't responded sooner to your post.

Hi Allen, thanks for adding to the thread. How did you eventually get on?

Cheers

Sorry guys, I forgot to mention that I had the problem with the starting again and each time I disconnected and re-connected it started, so, it was the clutch safety switch all the time.

Have a good one,

Matt
