 The big house
« Thread Started on Nov 7, 2009, 9:18pm »

Hi, I'm trying to get the photo uploading to work and thought I'd start a new thread and see if I can get it to work on this one.

I have been working at a new house that is being built on the west side of Okanagan lake and it's rather unique. First off it's large, 38,500 sq ft large and it's only a single bedroom dwelling. There is a semi attached guest suite with it's own bedroom, kitchen, bath and living area but that doesn't count. Neither does the help quarters, although they are both in the overall floor space. The master bedroom is large with lots of windows overlooking the lake. The house is built close to the lakeshore and has lots of room around it. The property is 350 acres with a beachfront of 1.5 miles. Not a bad set-up.

The roof is made of copper sheets as are the gutters and fascia's. All the metal parts on the exterior of the house are powder-coated in a burnished copper color to match. Nice touch.
There are two garages, one on the lower level and one on the third level. The lower one has it's own wash bay that is just like a car wash. As there is quite a bit of driveway and the winter can have snow, this lower one is used for summer time and the upper one with the least amount of slope to access is for all year use. Summer and winter garage makes sense as names.
The overhead doors are all custom made with beautiful wooden panels hand made on site. The weight of the doors means the lifting motors are very strong and multi geared to handle the job. Makes the use of the hand chains very slow.

The need for a crane to lift steel and material into place was overcome when the owner went to Italy and bought one for the job. Sure makes it nice when you want to lift something.

There is a woodwork shop in the lowest level that would make all the woodworkers out there green with envy. It's seem to have every tool known to man and then some. With about 5000 sq ft of space and storage rooms and washroom facilities of it's own its a nice place to tinker away the hours. The polished floor stays cleans due to the dust filtration system and vacuum heads on all the tools. Lots of lights too. Very nice. As all the doors and cabinets are built on site the tools are production sized. When something is made the wood is resawn to size and planed/sanded to exacting standards. Then the item is created in the workshop. I have watched some of the processes in amazement and have to admit, I've never seen anything like this before.

Hi, This house is a place I have been working at off and on since the summer.
It is not mine for sure as the budget is so far out of my reach I couldn't afford the driveways. (one is 1.5 mi of pavement) That crane is a 1.5 mil touch.
It really is a beautiful place and nice to see someone enjoying the ability to do what he wants. It's been under construction for over two years now and completion is sometime in 2012 maybe. That's just the house, not the landscaping.

Interesting to see a splendid home being made. And the owner certainly has a common interest too, woodwork :) Well, spending his money this way, he certainly can look, feel and enjoy everyday :)
(I would suggest he keep a Chinese tractor at the main entrance for mowing and snow clearing :))
